The HP LaserJet 4250 is programmed to display “Perform Printer Maintenance” after printing 225,000 pages give or take depending on the operating environment and media. Concurrently, when this particular prompt appears, the rollers and fuser assembly are nearing their end of life. The printer is yet to stop running though. But you should be concerned as you will get inconsistent printout quality not to mention risking permanent damage if you keep printing on it. You will need a printer maintenance kit to clear this notification message and extend the functional life of the machine.
The HP LaserJet 4250 Maintenance Kit Contents
- 1 Fuser assembly
- 1 Transfer roller
- 1 Plastic transfer roller tool
- 1 Pickup roller
- 6 Rollers for all other trays - Depending on which optional tray you have, you might not need all the rollers. For the most basic one, you will only need 2.
What you will need:
- Latex gloves
- Flathead screwdriver
Phase #1: Replace fuser assembly.
- Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord. Let the fuser cool down before proceeding. If an optional duplexer is installed, lift and pull to remove it from the back of the printer.
- Lower the rear output bin cover. Flex the arms on the plastic output bin slightly to remove one side of the tray at a time. Set the output bin cover aside.
- While grasping onto both sides of the fuser, push the blue levers upward and pull it straight out.
- Once you have a correct fuser matched up with your model, install the replacement fuser by inserting it and aligning the left side first. Do not touch the black surface of the trans roller when handling it.
- Push the fuser firmly - listen for the sound of both blue levers clicking into place. If the fuser does not click into place you run the risk of wearing out both the fuser and the gears that drive the fuser prematurely.
- Reinstall the plastic rear output bin.
Phase #2: Install the transfer roller.
- Open the top cover and remove the LaserJet 4250 toner cartridge.
- Use the plastic transfer tool to slightly lift the geared metal shaft upward.
- Slightly move the transfer roller to the side and lift it up to remove it.
- Install the replacement transfer roller. Put in the open side of the trans roller first then snap the geared end in place.
Phase #3: Install the pickup and separation rollers.
- Remove the front accessory cover.
- Locate the pickup roller. You will find it at the center of the first tray.
- Slide apart the two latches located on the top part of the roller simultaneously then lift to remove it.
- Slide in the replacement roller until it snaps into place.
- Reinstall the front accessory cover.
- Install the toner cartridge and close the front and top panels.
- Open and remove tray #2.
- Locate the feed roller inside the tray 2 opening. It’s the first roller you will touch.
- Pinch the blue lock tab and slide the roller to the left to remove the roller.
- Install the new feed roller and make sure it is locked into place.
- On the bin of the second tray, you will find the separation roller on the center. Open the left cover by swinging it upward.
- Remove the roller and reinstall the replacement. Make sure it is locked in place.
Phase #4: Reset the maintenance counter.
- Turn the printer on.
- Press and hold down the check button until the 3 led lights have a solid glow
- Press and hold the up arrow until the new maintenance kit is detected.
- Press the check button.
- Reboot the printer and test print.
